Trimming the Fat...All the Fat

According to the American Obesity Association, approximately two-thirds of Americans age 20 and over are overweight. About one-half of overweight Americans are considered obese. That's a lot of junk in the trunk. Guess what: We in the Navy have our share of overweight Sailors, and, yes, probably a couple of obese Sailors as well.

The Navy's most recent revision to its physical fitness instruction, OPNAVINST 6110.1G, came out in 2005. A large portion of this instruction is dedicated to discussion of the semi-annual Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA). The PFA is a combination of the Physical Readiness Test (PRT), which consists of push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach and run/swim and the Body Composition Assessment (BCA), which is the height and weight/body fat measurement. Sailors who are the proper weight for their height, are below the maximum allowable body fat percentage and complete the minimum requirements for the PRT are considered "within standard."

Hearing these words from your mother when you're 13 years old doesn't exactly instill a sense of security in your future. By the time I was 17, I was ready to leave the nest. To hell with being told how to dress, where to go, what to do and whom to do it with. I was going to be my own man, make my own decisions.

So I took my independent-minded self straight to my ticket to freedom, knocked on the door, and—"Welcome to the Navy Recruiting Office. What can we do for you?"
